VIBRATION

Vibration is the term given to an oscillatory motion involving an object moving back and forth.

Under ILO Convention C148, article 3, vibration is defined as:

“any vibration which is transmitted to the human body through solid structures and is harmful to health or otherwise dangerous.”

HandArm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) Under the UK’s Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005: •

HAVS is defined as:- “Mechanical vibration which is transmitted into the hands and arms during a work activity.”

HAVS Syndrome :-

  • White fingers.
  • Muscle weakening.
  • Joint damage.
  • Nerve damage.

Basic Vibration exposure control measures :- 

  1. Reduce the vibration at source.

such as elimination, substitution, change, maintenance.

2. Interrupting the pathway

e.g – isolation.

3. Limiting the duration of exposure.

4. Health surveillance.
